If so, we have a fun, no-pressure yoga series designed for you. Intro to Yoga is a four-week workshop that will introduce students to some yoga basics including breathing, gentle warm ups, the warrior series, and some strength-building and balancing sequences.

Week 1: Yoga Basics Breath & Movement

  • Learn the Dirgha breath (basic pranayama) & practice gentle warm ups, spinal movement, & reclined twists.
  • Build into mountain pose, forward folds & halfway lift
  • Explore downward facing dog before heading back onto the mat for constructive rest & bridge pose with a block
  • Integrate the benefits of your practice with final resting pose aka savasana

Week 2: Stability and Balance

  • Explore different variations of breath-work (pranayama) and release tension with neck and shoulder stretches
  • Warmup your spinal and body with birddog, calf stretches, hip circles, low lunges
  • Build into standing strength (warriors) and balance poses (tree)
  • Head back to the mat to wind down with seated tree & reclined pigeon
  • Settle in for final resting pose (savasana)

Week 3: Sun Salutations and Building strength

  • Start with breath-work (pranayama) and gentle spinal warmups
  • Continue to warmup with dynamic birddog and plank holds
  • Build strength with the sun salutation series
  • Back to the mat with core cultivation and bridge poses
  • Slow down with a restorative inversion
  • Take final rest in savasana

Week 4: Basic Vinyasa Flow

  • Warm up with breath-work and spinal movements
  • Gradually build into a dynamic warm up
  • Gently flow through sun salutations and the warrior series
  • Find your balance in standings pose(s)

MORE ABOUT YOUR GUIDE

Joan Vredenburgh

I found yoga over 20 years ago and practiced it on and off until a running injury brought me to the mat full time. It was then I discovered that yoga was more than physical asana; it was also a path to help me slow down and reconnect with myself and others.

In 2018, I completed my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) with Coral Brown at All That Matters and have been sharing my practice with others ever since.

The first Yama—Ahimsa—to do no harm, guides my yoga teaching. I strive to create safe and welcoming vinyasa classes, suitable for students of all levels and abilities.

Off the mat, I am an English Professor at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport where I teach reluctant students the finer points of college composition.

Joan will also be leading a Restorative Mini-Retreat on Saturday November 14th. Tap here for more details.
